38 Weeks Pregnant with a Broken Toe

Actually, make that 2 broken toes. Because it is not hard enough waddling around here while chasing after 3 rambunctious boys, let's add some broke appendages to the mix. SWEET!

Yesterday evening was going as most evenings normally do around here. Its close to 5 and I am finishing up dinner. The boys are running around and being boys. Josh comes into the kitchen and I hear him chewing on something and it just doesn't sound right. I look down at him and he has a coin in his mouth. For fellow New England folk, you may be familiar with Big Y supermarkets and the coins they hand out. Now I shop at Stop & Shop 99.9% of the time but occasionally run into Big Y for emergency items. Every time I go in they give me one of these darn coins. Well one must have been out on the counter and he grabbed it. He never puts things in his mouth anymore, I mean he's 2.5. I freaked and lunged down at him to get the coin out, which I did. But somehow in the process, I hurt my toes on my right foot.

Initially I was fine. But a minute later the pain started to creep into my toes and slowly increased into excruciating pain. So now I am limping around trying to finish up dinner. I look down and can see that my 2 toes are now turning black and are crazy swollen. The pain gets so bad that I can no longer walk and I am in tears. I honestly have no idea how I hurt it. My only guesses are I smacked it into the floor, but I don't have any recollection of that, or when I lunged I hyper-extended my toes and they cracked.

Lucky for me my brother and sister-in-law live locally and he drove over to bring me to the ER while my husband stayed home with the boys. I wasn't really sure if they could even do anything for a broken toe, but i was in so much pain I figured I better go check. We weren't there too long actually, maybe an hour or so. When I walked I had to tell them that no, I was not in labor, just had some broken toes. No X-Rays were done, obviously since I am pregnant. The PA told me there really isn't anything they can do for a broken toe anyway unless its really deformed or dislocated. She squeezed and bent my toes (OUCH!) to confirm that they were not dislocated and then taped them together for some support. I am to keep off my feet as much as possible (yeah right), keep my foot elevated and ice the toes.

The swelling has gone down today but my toes are killing me. And since it is my right foot, I can't drive so my husband brought our oldest to preschool this morning. I'm trying my best to stay on the couch, but its a lot easier said than done with kids around. What really stinks is we were planning on getting some walking in for me over the next 2 weeks to try and get this baby moving, but that is shot now. I just hope it starts to feel better by the time he arrives.

So that was my excitement from last night. Fun times. :)

And I can't believe you are already 38 weeks! Ack!

  8. I broke my toe once when I jammed it into the door. It hurt terribly for the first couple of days, but then it wasn't too bad. Up until another girl jammed her foot into my broken toes. I got an awesome bruise though that spread onto my foot. Here's hoping you feel better in a couple of days!
