My youngest boy will be 16 months old next week. When he was just 3 weeks old he was admitted to the hospital with RSV. It was absolutely the most terrifying experience of my life. While I know that RSV is common and many babies get through it just fine, those are not the stories that you hear about. Unfortunately, you always hear about the tragic stories. As you can imagine, those 3 days in the hospital and the weeks following were nerve racking. It took about a month for his lungs to fully clear up.
Last week myself, the twins and the little man all came down with a wicked cold. No fevers but really thick, hoarse coughs and congestion. Saturday morning I decided to bring the baby to the pediatrician just to be safe. I could hear some slight wheezing and with his RSV history, I wanted them to listen to his lungs. Babies who get RSV so young are predisposed to respiratory infections and asthma.
For some reason the thought never crossed my mind that this would be RSV again. However, that is exactly what the doctor said he had. At his age there is much less concern, however all those emotions from that scary time last year came flooding in. Why did my baby have to go through this all again? The positive was that his oxygen levels were 100% which is great. I left with instructions to keep an eye on him and bring him back in 2 days.
I brought him back in to be rechecked. His oxygen is still great at 99% and he really has not changed much. This is good news because its around this time that he would have been worse if it was going to happen. So now its just nurturing him till he gets this nasty thing out of his system. Unfortunately RSV lingers for about 2-3 weeks. This is where breastfeeding really comes in handy for us because when he is sick an clingy, nursing always makes him feel better.
I must say that I hope I never have to deal with those 3 letters again. I hate them.

Hope he's feeling better very soon. My lil guy has been fitting some sickies too and it's hard to watch them be miserable.
ReplyDeleteOh hugs! I've totally been there. My 2 year old asthmatic was in the hospital for 3 days last Winter due to this horrid virus. Hope your little guy is feeling better.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I'm so sorry. Neither of my kids have had RSV and it sounds like you've had more than your fair share. Hope the boys all feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteMy son had RSV when he was young. It's very scary. His pediatrician at the tine missed it. I took him to another dr who admitted to the hospital on sight. I hope all goes well and he's feeling better quickly.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's out of the hospital but it has to be a scary feeling. My daughter managed to escape RSV while in the NICU but I know lots of babies were in the hospital at the same time we were that had RSV - similar breathing issues. I hope your little man heals up and is all better soon!
ReplyDeleteHUGS, dealing with anything that is scary and has to do with children is very hard. I'm glad to know he's ok.
ReplyDeleteAww! Hoping he feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know that has to be tough on you mama. I'm glad it isn't as bad this time around and I hope he continues to get better!
ReplyDeletePraying for him! RSV is no fun.
ReplyDeleteYuck I'm sorry :( My baby has had RSV twice as well. He is 16 months. THANK GOD he didn't have it really early because he is a preemie, and I don't even want to think about young babies having it that early (like yours) or a preemie... Thankfully our second bout wasn't too bad, but it turned into croup, an ear infection, and pink eye. *sigh* but he wasn't nearly as miserable as he was the first time. It's so so so scary!!! I hope your little man feels better soon. I am not GLAD to see someone with multiple RSV cases, but it's helpful to know there are moms out there like me!
ReplyDeletePoor thing. I remember those day. Hope your little one feels better soon. when the kids were little we had that all the time going around here my daughter and my niece both did a week stay in the hospital
